It's Time to Cover Up

Have you ever heard the song Tainted Love by Soft Cell? What if I told you it wasn't by Soft Cell? What if I went even further and told you that it was originally a Motown song? Well, that's exactly what it was. It was written by a man named Ed Cobbs from the band The Four Preps. He gave the song to Gloria Jones who recorded the song as a B-side to the single My Bad Boy's Comin' Home. The single was a failure which made Tainted Love even less popular than the single which never made any of the charts anywhere. Soft Cell eventually heard about it and decided to record it in 1981 with some drastic differences. Slower tempo, a different key, and completely different instruments went together to make this song a hit for Soft Cell. How big of a hit was it? It hit #1 on Australian Kent Music Report, the Belgium Ultratop 50 Flanders, the Canadian RPM Top Singles, the South African charts, and the UK charts. The lowest it's ever been on the charts is #12. Not too shabby, right?

Everyday I'm Shufflin'

Local bands week is over and it's time to start the week off by hitting shuffle on the Mellow Dice radio. This time around we come up with a song called The Night Out by Martin Solveig. Solveig is an electronic music DJ who started making music in 1994 in Neuilly-sur Seine, France. This song, The Night Out, was released in April of last year, and hit #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmi5GfBubZg

Saying I Hate Jazz is Cliche

We've all heard this before and if you haven't heard it already you will before you die. "I hate Jazz." I don't understand how a person can hate a whole genre of music without hearing all that is in it. I hate most kinds of rap. However, I'm quite fond of metal rap. It's to unique to pass up in my opinion. The only thing wrong about a person hating Jazz is they have to be more specific. You see Jazz is like shrimp. There's a lot of ways to have shrimp; there's also a lot of forms of Jazz. Here's what I mean let me quote Bubba from Forrest Gump. Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it. Now you may hate barbecued shrimp but that doesn't mean you hate shrimp. Now I'm not a huge fan of New Orleans Jazz because it's all horns and brass instruments, but I do enjoy smooth Jazz. So before you down a whole genre of music be a good sport and listen to a wide range of that genre. Anyway I should let the song do the talking. Sinatra is better with words than I am. Hope you enjoy this smooth Jazzy tune it's called "How Insensitive."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMsTbI1chdI

I Leave You With This...

It's the middle of summer, but there's still a Change of Seasons. I'm talking, of course, about the song by Sweet Thing. Sweet Thing started back in 2008 in Ontario, Canada. They got their name from the song by Van Morrison called, well, you know what it's called. The band members consist of people such as Owen Carrier as the lead singer; Nick Rose on guitar and vocals; Alex Winter playing guitar; Morgan Waters on bass; and Tyler Kyte on drums. Their song, Change of Season, comes off of their self titled debut album that was released back in 2010. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TaxO18KOaU

They're the Party, We're the People.

This local band is a little less well known, but we're gonna try and fix that right now. The band is called The Party Scene. They're a punk rock band from Summerville, GA who spend their off time with cheesecake eating contests and rugby. The member include Dominick Bennet on guitar and vocals; Jacob Barret on lead guitar; Chris Woods on the drums; and Dallas York on the bass. They don't have a full album out yet, but you can check out the awesome music on Souncloud here: https://soundcloud.com/the-party-scene
