It's Time to Cover Up

Have you ever heard the song Tainted Love by Soft Cell? What if I told you it wasn't by Soft Cell? What if I went even further and told you that it was originally a Motown song? Well, that's exactly what it was. It was written by a man named Ed Cobbs from the band The Four Preps. He gave the song to Gloria Jones who recorded the song as a B-side to the single My Bad Boy's Comin' Home. The single was a failure which made Tainted Love even less popular than the single which never made any of the charts anywhere. Soft Cell eventually heard about it and decided to record it in 1981 with some drastic differences. Slower tempo, a different key, and completely different instruments went together to make this song a hit for Soft Cell. How big of a hit was it? It hit #1 on Australian Kent Music Report, the Belgium Ultratop 50 Flanders, the Canadian RPM Top Singles, the South African charts, and the UK charts. The lowest it's ever been on the charts is #12. Not too shabby, right?

Until next time, roll the Mellow Dice and hope for Midnight.
